The end of your time in halls is approaching, and while moving out might feel overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. With this step-by-step cleaning checklist, you can stay organised and get everything sorted without the stress. Tackle one section at a time, and tick off the tasks as you go!
1. Tidy up your room first
Let’s start with the basics and clear the main areas to make your room feel fresh.
- Donate/remove any unwanted items: You should first clear out all the stuff you don't want (it will make the clean A LOT easier). Please consider donating any items through the Reuse Fair.
- Vacuum the floor: Don’t forget to get into the corners and edges where dust hides.
- Dust surfaces: Wipe down your desk, shelves, and window sills.
- Wipe down walls: Use a damp cloth or magic eraser to clean any scuff marks.
- Clear under the bed: Check for anything you may have missed under there.
- Wipe the bed frame: Dust or clean your bed frame, especially if it's wooden or has fabric.
- Leave the mattress protector on the bed, do not remove or dispose of this
2. Tackle the bathroom
Get this done early so it doesn’t get left until the last minute.
- Scrub the toilet: Don’t forget the toilet seat, flush handle, and the area behind it.
- Clean the sink and taps: Remove soap scum and toothpaste stains.
- Shower or bath: Use bathroom cleaner to scrub the tiles and remove soap scum.
- Clean mirrors: Use glass cleaner for a streak-free finish.
- Mop the floor: Sweep up and give the bathroom floor a good mop.
3. Clean the kitchen
Now’s the time to give your kitchen the attention it deserves.
- Empty the fridge: Throw out any expired or unwanted food.
- Clean the fridge shelves: Wipe them down with a damp cloth to get rid of spills.
- Clean the microwave: Wipe inside and out, including the turntable and door seal.
- Tackle the oven: Use baking soda or an oven cleaner to get rid of built-up grime.
- Wipe counters and surfaces: Make sure to clean any crumbs or sticky spots.
- Sweep and mop the floor: Sweep up any crumbs and mop the kitchen floor.
4. Don’t forget the living room (if applicable)
If you’ve spent time in a shared living space, make sure to clean these areas too and recommend coming up with a fair plan so everyone in the flat contributes.
- Vacuum the floor: Get rid of crumbs, dust, and debris from rugs and floors.
- Dust all surfaces: Wipe down shelves, coffee tables, TV stands, and other furniture.
- Clean the sofa and cushions: Vacuum the couch and fluff up the cushions. If there are stains, spot clean them.
- Wipe down electronics: Dust off the TV, game consoles, and any other devices.
- Empty bins: Take out any rubbish and dispose of it properly.
5. Finishing touches
Now, let’s make sure everything is spotless before you finish up.
- Empty all rubbish bins: Don’t leave trash lying around.
- Check all drawers and storage spaces: Make sure you haven’t left anything behind.
- Wipe down window sills and clean the windows: A quick dust and wipe will do the trick.
- Vacuum or wipe curtains/blinds: They can get dusty too, so give them a quick clean.
6. Final walkthrough
Before you hand in your keys, do a final check of your room.
- Final vacuum: Do one last sweep of the floors to make sure it’s clean.
- Check for missed spots: Look around for areas that might need a quick clean.
- Look for stains or spills: Spot clean any noticeable stains.
- Check for forgotten items: Quickly check for any chargers, clothes, or belongings you might’ve missed.
