Kitchen inspections: what to expect

Posted 10 hours ago

What’s checked and how to meet the standard

If you’re living in Queen Mary Residential Services managed accommodation this year, regular communal kitchen inspections will begin on Tuesday 6 October 2026.

The inspections are there to make sure shared kitchens are being kept clean, safe and in good condition, while also identifying any issues that need attention.

For residents in Aspire Point or Sherren House, your own local management team will carry out checks as advised to you directly. Expectations across all halls are similar, as outlined below.

For returning residents, the arrangements may be different from when you last lived in halls. The Residential Cleaning team is not responsible for cleaning flat kitchens this year, so keeping your kitchen clean is a shared responsibility between everyone in the flat.

Your Cleaning Agreement sets out the standard expected. If a kitchen does not meet this standard, residents will be contacted and asked to address the issues identified, with further action possible if standards continue not to be met.

When will inspections take place?

Kitchen inspections will take place fortnightly.

You will not be given a specific date or time for your individual inspection. Instead, your kitchen will be checked at some point during each two-week inspection period, so it’s important to keep the space clean, tidy and in good condition throughout.

Members of the Residential Operations team will visit kitchens and check their general cleanliness, condition and upkeep.

After each inspection, an inspection card will be left on the kitchen table to show whether your kitchen:

  • meets the required standard
  • requires some additional attention
  • requires further action before the next inspection

What will staff be looking for?

During an inspection, staff will check that your kitchen is being maintained in line with your Cleaning Agreement, accommodation licence agreement and Residents’ Handbook.

This includes:

  • clean worktops without food or spills
  • a clean and drained sink
  • hobs, ovens and microwaves cleaned after use
  • a hygienic fridge and freezer
  • clean floors
  • bins emptied regularly
  • washing-up completed and put away
  • no excessive clutter, rubbish or food waste

The best way to stay on top of things is to clean as you go and share responsibilities fairly. Use your Cleaning Agreement and cleaning rota to divide jobs, talk to your flatmates early if something is not working, and contact the Residential Services team if you need support.

There will also be an end-of-term event to recognise some of the best-maintained kitchens, with group and individual prizes available.
