What are you doing?
With the increasing amount of work taking place at the top of Westfield Way to build the new School of Business Management, it is becoming increasingly difficult for taxis (including Bolt, Uber, Black Cabs, and mini-cabs) to safely drop people off in this area and for residents to collect takeaway deliveries ordered from an app (e.g., Just Eat, Uber Eats, and Deliveroo) or directly with a takeaway.
Following an assessment of the options available, the University has decided to designate the Bancroft Road entrance between the Fogg Building and Graduate Centre as a drop-off and takeaway collection point overnight between 19:00 and 02:00, 7 days a week. To support residents with this, Security Guards will be present throughout and student ID cards should be taken to show to enter campus after being dropped off or collecting takeaways. Any deliveries presenting to the Westfield Way entrance, or ArtsOne Passageway for residents will be redirected to this new location, please ensure you therefore request any deliveries or taxi pick-ups and drop-offs to/from this point during these hours.
Why are you doing this?
In making this decision, the following have been considered:
1. Shortened Journey Times – By offering a new access point into campus close to the Drapers Bar and Lounge, Qmotion and Stepney Green underground and local bus stops, a more direct route for residents living in the Student Village or Westfield Way to return to their accommodation will be available. It will also make visiting friends on campus or accessing the Library easier.
2. Improved Security – With a new route into campus at night, increased pedestrian traffic and a static security guard presence there will now be visible deterrence and access to Security directly for anyone in the Bancroft Road area with a concern.
3. Safer Pick-ups and Drop-Offs - A safer and more convenient location for taxis to pick up and drop off for passengers and food deliveries reducing congestion and potentially unsafe traffic movements in and out of the Westfield Way gates. Ensure you also check our tips for staying safe on a night out in London.
As always, safety and security are prime concerns, and we always review these to meet the needs of those living in Queen Mary halls.
How will you decide if it’s working?
Following the change, a trial review period will happen and further communication will be sent if any adjustments are needed.
