Staying Healthy During Winter

Tips to Keep you Healthy!

When it comes to staying healthy in the winter season, many of us automatically think of exercising and going to the gym. But I think staying healthy goes beyond this! Although maintaining your fitness is important, there are other factors you can consider to help you stay well through the darker and colder months.

I have listed some tips that can help you this winter and divided them into three groups: Health Tips, Food Tips and Social Tips.

Health Tips💊

1.      Make sure you are getting enough good quality sleep💤

This means you may need to make some changes to your night routine. For example, reducing your screen time before you sleep and avoiding caffeine a couple of hours before you sleep.

2.      Leave your room (and leaving your room to go to the kitchen doesn’t count!)🛤

As simple as it may sound, leaving your accommodation at least once each day can be very beneficial to your well-being. You will be able to get some fresh air, stretch your body, and spend some time in nature – all great mood boosters. Lucky for most of you, there are amazing spaces around the Mile End and Whitechapel campus to explore. Why don’t you try out Libby’s Choose Your Own Adventure Game to find something to do?

3.      Make sure you are keeping warm during the cold weather.🧥🥵

Keeping warm is very important. Make sure you are checking whether your room is warm enough and if you notice any issues with your heating, report it. Check out our article on how to report maintenance issue.

For residents living in Aspire Point, Blithehale Court, and Sherren House, please refer to your building’s maintenance reporting process.

Additionally, when you are going out, choose clothes that will keep you warm!

Food Tips🥗

1.      Add fruits and vegetables to your meals🍊🥑

There are so many ways you can incorporate fruit and vegetables into your everyday meals. This can be through small changes like swapping out your morning cereal for granola with fresh, dried or frozen fruits and yoghurt. If you ever need inspiration, have a look on our website, for quick and easy recipes you can try out. For example, you can try out this creamy mushroom pasta with chicken strips recipe.

2.      Cook more, eat out and order takeouts less!👩‍🍳

Try setting time aside to cook your own meals and experiment with new recipes. Not only will this save you money, but it gives you control over what goes into your food and you are gaining a very important life skill!!

Social tips🙌

1.      Spend time with your flatmates or friends👩🏻‍🤝‍🧑🏽

Do fun and exciting things together with your flatmates. With Christmas coming up, why don’t you organise a trip to IKEA to pick up a gingerbread house to decorate as a flat?

2.      Staying in touch with family and friends📲

If you are unable to go back home during the Christmas closure period to visit your family and friends, why don’t you schedule some time each week to call them?

3. Attend Residential Life Events ✨🎇

Over the University closure period, the Residential Life team will be organising a small number of events to support residents staying in halls. This will be a great opportunity to do something fun without having to travel much and the best part? Most of our events will be free!

Thanks for reading and I hope you find these tips useful!
