Drinking responsibly... we promise this isn't a lecture and we're not trying to discourage you from having a good time. While there are plenty of ways to have fun without alcohol, we understand the drinking culture is big in the UK - so why not do it the right way? Whether it’s hitting the pub, going to a club, or enjoying a few drinks at a house party, here are some easy tips to keep your night fun without spoiling the party mood.
1. Pace yourself
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, especially when drinks are flowing. But pacing yourself is key to enjoying the whole night without things getting messy too quickly. Alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks or water – not only will this keep you hydrated, but it’ll also help you stay in control. No one wants to be the one who’s passed out before midnight!
2. Eat before you drink
Drinking on an empty stomach is a recipe for disaster. Make sure to have a decent meal before you head out – it slows down the absorption of alcohol and keeps you feeling more balanced throughout the night. Eating with the group you're about to go out with is always a win, why not get a cheeky takeaway together?
- Tip: If you’re in a rush, even a snack can help. Something like toast or a sandwich will do the trick. Getting something to eat in the middle of your night works too.
3. Everyone has different limits (and that's okay!)
Everyone’s tolerance to alcohol is different, and there’s no shame in knowing when to stop. Just because your mate can knock back shots all night doesn’t mean you have to keep up. Listen to your body and know when enough is enough. You’ll thank yourself the next morning when you’re not feeling rough!
- Tip: Set your limit before you head out. Whether it’s sticking to a certain number of drinks or switching to water after a certain point, having a soft plan in place can help.
4. Stick with your mates
One of the golden rules of a night out: never leave anyone behind. Stay with your group, keep an eye on each other, and make sure everyone knows where they’re going. If someone needs to head home early or isn’t feeling well, make sure they’re not alone. A good night out is all about having fun together – and making sure everyone gets home safely.
- Tip: Set up a group chat before the night starts to help you stay in contact with each other and share locations if needed.
5. Keep an eye on your drink
Unfortunately, drink spiking can happen, and it’s something to be mindful of. Always keep an eye on your drink and never leave it unattended. If you’ve put your drink down and aren’t sure if it’s safe, don’t risk it – grab a new one. Likewise, don’t accept drinks from strangers unless you’ve seen the bartender make it.
6. Plan your journey home
Don’t wait until the end of the night to figure out how you’re getting home. Whether it’s catching a taxi, using public transport, or walking, make sure you have a safe and reliable way to get back. If you’re taking public transport, check the last bus, tube or train times in advance. If you’re getting a taxi, it’s always better to share a ride with friends.
- Tip: Keep a bit of extra cash or make sure your phone is fully charged for booking a taxi in case plans change last minute.
7. Rehydrate before bed
Don't want to wake up feeling rough after a heavy night? Then drink water throughout the night, it really is that simple. But if the thought of drinking water during the night blows your mind, you can at the very least have a pint of water before bed. It will make a huge difference in how you feel the next day if you combo that with a pint of water when you wake up the next day.
- Tip: Some/most clubs and bars have free water available, so don’t be afraid to ask for it when you need a break from alcohol.
8. Watch out for each other
If you notice one of your mates isn’t feeling great or has had a bit too much to drink, step in and help them out. Grab them some water, help them find a taxi, or just let them know you're there if they need it.
9. Know when to call it a night
There’s no shame in calling it a night early if you’re not feeling it. Peer pressure at uni is massive and we understand it can be difficult to leave, especially if you're the only one wanting to... but trust your instincts! There’s always another night out, and you’re better off leaving on a high note than pushing yourself too far.
- Tip: If you end up heading home solo, make sure to let a mate know and send them a message when you get back safely.
