If you're reading this, it likely means you've just embarked on your journey as a student at Queen Mary. Firstly, a big congratulations to you! This is an exciting chapter, and we're thrilled to be part of the wonderful experiences you'll create here.
Secondly, if you're stepping into university life for the first time, you might be thinking, "I have no idea what I'm doing!" — and that's perfectly normal! Each student's path is unique, but our goal is to provide you with a clear picture of what to expect at Queen Mary.
So here are some key bits of information to kick off your journey the right way. For those joining us from abroad, rest assured, we're here to offer all the support you need.
Before you arrive
What do I need to pack?
Panic packing is a common occurrence for students. You feel the urge to bring literally everything you own and then half that stuff just ends up collecting dust/taking up space. We recommend bringing just your "essentials" so you are prepared for your course and living away from home.
But okay, you get to uni and while unpacking, you discover you've forgotten a key item (such as a cooking pot), what do you do then? You can use our online shop to buy any items you are missing as we supply all the common items students forget.
If you're completely unsure what to pack in the first place, take a page out of Eniola's book and follow her guide on what to include in your suitcase. You should also consider what different types of clothes you need for different seasons. We're in the middle of the colder seasons right now so make sure to pack a solid winter wardrobe.
What are my flatmates going to be like?
Usually, the first thing on a lot of students' minds is their flatmates. Who are they, will I get on with them, how can I get on with them?
While we can't make any promises on what kind of people your flatmates will end up being, we can help you form friendships with your flatmates. Even if you end up being very different personality-wise from your flatmates, you can still find common ground by spending time with them in various fun ways.
Don't forget that your accommodation building will be bigger than just your flat, and there will be plenty of people to meet and make friends with! This year, incoming Queen Mary residents will be invited to join our Unibuddy platform, where you can get acquainted with your flatmates and neighbours before Move In Weekend.
Check back soon for more information on Unibuddy - and look out for your invitation following your offer of accommodation!
What should I expect when I move in?
You'll probably have a long day of packing, travelling, trying to find where to go, unpacking, meeting your flatmates and more! It can be chaotic but with time you will settle in.
The communal areas of your flat will be clean and prepared for your arrival. You will have your own space in the fridge, freezer and cupboards and, as it's a shared space, please be mindful if your other flatmates have not moved in yet and leave enough space for their belongings. See what will be included in your kitchen.
Your bedroom will also have everything you need from a fresh bed to plenty of storage, all you need to do is unpack and make it your own. Here's everything that is included in your bedroom.
