Our recommendations for stuff happening in April
April is here, bringing the Easter holidays, brighter days, and London’s famously unpredictable weather, sunshine one moment and rain the next. But even with the changing skies, the city is glowing with spring blooms, from cherry blossoms to colourful tulips. It’s the perfect time to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and make the most of all the free fun London has to offer this month.
Art & Culture
- Dana‑Fiona Armour’s Serpentine Currents is a striking free outdoor installation at Somerset House, Blending sculpture, science, and responsive light technology, the work brings attention to the changing conditions of our oceans and the fragile ecosystems they support.
- The long‑awaited V&A East Museum opens on 18 April 2026, bringing a major new free cultural space to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Designed as a “new kind of museum,” it spans five floors devoted to creativity, innovation, and global culture, rooted in the stories and voices of East London
Outdoor Activities
- With 195 years of rivalry and counting, The Boat Race has become synonymous with British tradition and excellence. The famous Oxford vs Cambridge race will take place on Saturday 4 April. Pick a spot along the banks of the Thames between Putney Bridge and Chiswick Bridge, and you should be able to see the boats.
- Tower Bridge remains one of London’s most magnificent and iconic landmarks and watching it open is still a magical sight. The bridge’s two bascules rise majestically as they have for over a century, to let tall vessels pass along the Thames. Tower Bridge opens around 800 times a year, with scheduled lift times published so visitors can catch this old and stately engineering marvel in action. It’s a moment that blends history, craftsmanship, and classic London grandeur
- See London’s Spring Blooms April is one of the city’s prettiest months, with cherry blossom, tulips and bluebells at their peak, plus the early arrival of wisteria toward the end of the month. Stroll your local park or head to your favourite flower spots across London for a completely free spring escape.
