What it's like to live in Sherren House

Sherren House

The bedroom

It was a medium sized room with a cupboard, 2 sets of drawers. The cupboard had small spaces to store clothes and a very large space for things to hang but I did manage during my time there. It was right next to the door but I seldom had any issues with light or noise.

What size was the bed? Double

Did you have an ensuite?

Yes. I had my own bathroom which was spacious. It had a sink, shower and toilet. I was in charge of getting my own toilet roll and keeping the bathroom clean.

The kitchen

How many people lived in your flat? 6

The kitchen was quite big and enough for 6 people. It contained an oven, kettle and table. The cupboards were quite big and could store enough space. There were issues keeping it clean and not all people stuck to the rota we made of emptying the trash or keeping it clean but we managed.

Laundry

There were laundry facilities in the building.

Social spaces

Sherren House has multiple social spaces in the building.

There were about 3 common rooms and 2 were designated study spaces. The common room was quite nice and I enjoyed using the TV, playing carrom and card games. It was very enjoyable!

Additionally, there were benches in the courtyard outside which made for a really nice space to hang out when the weather was nice. Residents held birthday parties, played games and watched movies/sports matches!

Where did you and your flatmates usually hang out?

The common room and courtyard were our main hangout spots, especially when the weather was nice!

Location

How long did it take you to get to the Mile End campus?

Sherren House in Mile End was about 15 minutes by walk from the main Mile End campus.

What were the transport links like?

The transport links were quite close since Stepney Green station was effectively right next to the hall. Bus stops were also quite close. It would take maybe 25-30 mins to get to central London from the front door.

What were the best parts of your hall's location?

Asda was quite close while it was open but it has since closed. ResLife periodically organized events at our halls that was quite fun. It was a nice and cozy place albeit a bit expensive in my opinion.

What were the worst parts of your hall's location?

The gates made the area feel a bit dangerous despite it being perfectly safe. Additionally, so did the barrier to what used to be Asda.

On the other hand, central London felt like a bit of an outlet and the uni felt like a place to do work so Sherren felt like a cozy home.

Community

The community was quite nice and everyone was very friendly and welcoming. We all got along very well.

In conclusion...

It was a nice place and I had a good stay there during the summer. I learnt a lot about how to handle flat disagreements and made some wonderful friends that I will treasure forever (shoutout to Ameerah who was the best flatmate ever!)
