How we can support you

What is Dyslexia?

In a nutshell, dyslexia is a common neurodevelopmental learning difficulty which affects information processing. People with dyslexia can have difficulty processing and remembering information that they both see and hear, which may cause difficulties around academics in learning, literacy skills, and the ability to organise and plan effectively.

This means studies can be frustrating, but here at Queen Mary, we have a team that can support you.

Disability and Dyslexia Service (DDS)

The Disability and Dyslexia Service provide confidential support for students with disabilities, specific learning differences, mental health challenges, and autism. Located on campus and online, the service assists with exam adjustments, Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) applications and one-to-one study skills. They can also provide referrals and diagnostic screenings to students who think they may have a specific learning difference.

Library support

The Library offers special facilities for students with disabilities; fr example, you can request to extend book loans for an extra week when borrowing. A small number of individual study carrels are available to students with disabilities (e.g, if you have a condition that affects your concentration and need to study on your own). Find out more on the Library's website.

Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA)

If you think you are eligible for a DSA, please contact the Disability and Dyslexia Service.

What is it?

The DSA is a non-means-tested grant that helps cover the additional support a disabled student needs to complete their course. It's not a cash award - it is used to fund support services and equipment, such as:

Who is eligible?
