Have your portable electrical appliances checked for safety!

To help keep you, your neighbours, and your accommodation safe, Residential Services is offering Free Electrical Safety Testing for all students living in Queen Mary Halls.

What’s Happening?

Our Electrical Engineers will be on hand to check your personal electrical appliances to ensure they’re safe to use in your room or shared kitchen. The process is quick, simple, and completely free — and it can help prevent avoidable electrical hazards in your accommodation.

Whether it's something you’ve brought from home, purchased in the UK, or shipped internationally, we strongly recommend getting it tested.

Why It Matters

Electrical safety is a key part of keeping our halls secure and comfortable for everyone. With more students than ever using multiple devices, chargers, cooking appliances, and high‑powered gadgets, it’s essential to make sure everything meets UK safety standards.

This is particularly important in tall buildings covered by the Building Safety Act, where we take a whole‑building approach to keeping residents protected. Your participation helps us build a safer living environment for all.

What Can I Bring?

Any personal electrical item you use in your room or kitchen, including:

  • Laptop and phone chargers
  • Hairdryers and straighteners
  • Irons
  • Air fryers
  • Shavers and toothbrush chargers
  • Extension leads
  • UK or international appliances

If it plugs in, bring it along for testing.

How Long Does It Take?

Most items only take a couple of minutes to test. You can drop in at any time — no booking required. Or if you live in Dawson Hall, leave your items on the kitchen table. and collect them later.
