If you're staying in halls over the festive period, London offers a variety of options to keep you entertained, fed, and connected to the holiday spirit. Whether you’re looking to explore the city or stay close to home, here’s a guide to what’s open on Christmas Day and throughout the holiday season.
Restaurants open on Christmas Day
If you’re not in the mood to cook, several restaurants across London will remain open. Close to Queen Mary’s Mile End campus, consider visiting:
- Tayyabs (Whitechapel): Famous for its Punjabi cuisine, Tayyabs is a great choice for a delicious and hearty meal.
- Zoom East (Aldgate): Enjoy contemporary dishes in a cosy setting.
There are apparently over 100 restaurants open on Christmas Day but make sure to book in advance, as these spots often fill up quickly on Christmas Day!
Explore London’s open spaces
All Royal Parks, including Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, and St. James’s Park, are open on Christmas Day. Take a brisk winter stroll or bring along a flask of hot chocolate to enjoy some downtime outdoors. Closer to campus, Victoria Park provides a peaceful retreat and is just a short walk away.
Other open attractions
- Trafalgar Square: Perfect for soaking up the holiday atmosphere, with its iconic Christmas tree still on display.
- Heated Pools: For the adventurous, Hampton Pool and Brockwell Lido are usually open for Christmas Day swims. Check opening times in advance.
Independent businesses and local shops
Many smaller, independent shops and cafés near campus might stay open for part of the day. It’s worth checking with local businesses in Mile End, Whitechapel, or Bethnal Green for their festive opening hours. Supporting these businesses is a great way to enjoy a sense of community while staying close to home.
Practical options
- Supermarkets: Most major chains, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons, will be closed. However, smaller stores like Tesco Express or Sainsbury’s Local may open for limited hours. Local corner shops are also a good bet for any last-minute essentials but we would recommend checking with your favourite stores now so you know their plans.
- Transport: Public transport services, including the Tube, buses, and trains, will not operate on Christmas Day. If you need to travel, plan ahead using taxis, ride-hailing apps (Uber), or Santander cycles (the best option). Check the TFL website for more information.
Stay connected
If you’re staying in halls, reach out to other students who are also around for the holidays. Organise a potluck Christmas dinner, a movie night, or even a Secret Santa to make the season special. You can also still get a ticket for Christmas Day at International Students House if you want to feel festive!
