What it's like to live in Floyer House

The experience of a real Queen Mary student
a large brick building with grass and trees

Floyer House

The bedroom

I had a single bed in an incredibly large room with a lot of walkable space. I had a lot of storage with a cupboard and large shelf along with desk drawers as well. I had a large window but the curtains usually covered everything. I also had a pin board, a sink and a mini fridge which were indispensable to me.

What size was the bed? Single

Did you have an ensuite? No

What was the shared bathroom like?

The shared bathroom was incredible and it was cleaned every day! Toilet roll was provided every day and things were cleaned all around. My bathroom caddy was really helpful and the bathrooms were open space but assigned, which made things very easy and convenient for everyone. I had 10 people living in my flat and 4 showers and 2 toilets which was very helpful!

The kitchen

How many people lived in your flat? 10

The kitchen was large and spacious. It had 2 hobs, 1 oven, 1 kettle and a large table. It was a very sociable place and we all enjoyed cooking there.

Laundry

There were laundry facilities in the basement of the building.

Social spaces

Floyer has multiple social spaces in the building.

We did not have an official "common room" but there is an arrangement of sofas that no one really goes to. Everybody usually hangs out in their kitchens. There's also a large garden in the middle where bikes are kept and ResLife events are held, like tote bag designing and plant pot painting!

Where did you and your flatmates usually hang out?

We loved hanging out in the kitchen to either cook or just hangout in general. The garden was used in the same way but there was numerous events like tote bag designing and plant pot painting that went on as well. The ResLife events were very enjoyable and made the hall very sociable and lively.

Location

Floyer House is located at the Whitechapel campus.

What do you study, and on which campus did most of your classes take place?

I study Physics and I primarily do research which I preferred to do from the Mile End library. It takes about 20 mins walking to get there.

What were the transport links like?

It was right in front of Whitechapel station and the bus stop was right in front of it as well. The hospital was very close by which was very reassuring. Central London is very close by and it takes like ~15-25 mins by the tube. Whitechapel library is also very close and most of the Medicine students have lectures that are very close as well.

What were the best parts of your hall's location?

The hall was right in between central London and the Mile End campus which was very nice. The local cinema was close by, in addition to Sainsbury's and Iceland which I used quite often.

What were the worst parts of your hall's location?

It could feel a bit distant from the rest of the Whitechapel campus at times.

Community

The community was amazing in the hall! Due to the open space structure, almost everybody knew everybody and people would regularly hang out in each other's kitchens. I loved living there and there were loads of events that went on.

In conclusion...

I loved living there and it was an awesome and lively place. The friends I made were excellent and a joy to be around. As an homage to them and the slang that they taught me, I can confidently say that Floyer House was leng.
