Welcome to the September version of our Free Fun in London blog! A new academic year is here, the long summer days are getting shorter, the air is cooler, and the leaves on the ground are a sure sign that autumn is on its way. It’s the perfect time to explore the city, enjoy the fresh air, and discover amazing things to do without spending a penny. Here are some of the best free events and activities happening this September.

Art & Culture

  • The Open House Festival is an annual celebration of London's architecture and neighbourhoods, and the people and communities that make them. Every year, buildings and other sites across all 33 London boroughs open to the public, so that Londoners can explore and learn about them for free. This year’s festival will take place 13-21 September 2025.
  • London Design Festival, Discover cutting-edge design through free exhibitions and installations across the city. From the V&A to public spaces, creativity takes centre stage this September. From 13-21 September.

Outdoor Activities

  • Totally Thames Festival, Celebrate the River Thames with a month of free art, music, and cultural events along the riverbanks. Highlights include outdoor installations, guided walks, and family-friendly activities. There’ll be all kind of activities across September, from cleaning the River Thames to boat races and kayaking.
  • Frieze Sculpture, Stroll through Regent’s Park and admire large-scale contemporary sculptures in the open air. This free outdoor exhibition brings world-class art into one of London’s most beautiful green spaces. From 17 September to 2 November.

Queen Mary specific activities

As the new academic year begins, there’s plenty happening right here on campus to help you settle in, meet new people, and make the most of university life.

  • QMSU Events offer everything from welcome fairs and cultural celebrations to quiz nights and social mixers, perfect for making friends and discovering student societies. Tickets are free or very affordable.
  • Library Get Ahead Workshops are here to boost your confidence for the year ahead. These free sessions cover essential academic skills, from time management and research tips to essay writing and referencing.
