For many Christians, including myself, the idea that Easter is all about chocolates and bunnies is quite disheartening. Easter, for Christians, is a time of remembrance and celebration. Christians remember the love of God and what Jesus did for us all on the cross. They also celebrate His victory over death and sinš„³ and the victory we now have over death and sin if we believe in Him.
It is an important time not only in the Christian calendar but also the Jewish Calendar. This is because Easter falls near the time of the Jewish festival of Passover. During Passover, the Jewish community remembers what God did for them when they were enslaved in Egypt. They remember how the angel of the Lord passed over the houses of those who had the blood of a lamb on their doorposts. (You can read more about this in the book of Exodus chapter 12).
In the 40 days leading up to Easter (known as Lent), a number of Christians will give up luxuries such as chocolate, alcohol, and social media. Do you think you could give up social media for 40 days?!
It is believed that the 40 days signify the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness being tempted (more on this in the book of Matthew 4:1-11). These 40 days are a time for reflection and practising self-discipline, as this is what Jesus ultimately did for us.
The last week of Lent is often described as the Holy Week, as it follows the story and key moments leading up to Jesusā crucifixion and resurrection.
Hereās a breakdown of Holy Week:
- Palm Sunday: remembers Jesusā triumphant entry into Jerusalem where He was welcomed with palm branches (reference scriptures: Zechariah 9:9, Matthew 21:1-11)
- Holy Wednesday: remembers the betrayal of Judasš (reference scriptures: Matthew 26: 14-16)
- Mandy Thursday: remembers when Jesus washed the feet of His disciples and had the Last Supper (reference scriptures: John 13, Luke 22:19-20, Matthew 26:17- 30)
- Good Friday: remembers the death of Jesus (Matthew 27:11 - 56)
- Holy Saturday: remembers Jesusā body resting in the tomb (Matthew 27: 57-65)
- Easter Day: remembers the resurrection of Jesus from the dead (Matthew 28)
Getting Involvedā¦
Throughout April, there will be many events organised in London for Easter; Iāve added some of my recommendations.
The Last Supper
The producers of the popular TV series The Chosen will be releasing a special episode about The Last Supper that will be available to watch at the Cinemas from Thursday 10 April. Click here to find a cinema near your hall that will be screening this.
Check out the trailer below for a preview of what to expect.
The Passion of Jesus: Live Performance at Trafalgar Square
The Passion of Jesus is a live performance retelling the story of Jesusā final days on earth. The performance will be visible on a large screen, and British Sign Language will also be available!
Performances begin at 12pm and 3:15pm; but be sure to get there early as the event tends to be popular!
Take a look at the performance from last year!
I hope you have a blessed Easter, however you may be celebrating it!
