The feeling of homesickness can happen to anyone at any time. As an International Student I've definitely experienced this, so to offer some help to those who are also feeling homesick at university, here are my top 10 tips...

  1. Remember why you came to university, what was your motivation? What are your goals in the long run?
  2. Join your native societies, QM has lots of different societies you can join, this is a great way to connect with other students
  3. London has loads of things to offer so step out of your room. This could be as simple as going for a walk or you could even visit St Paul cathedral or the London Eye, there is so much to see.
  4. Being an international student you can feel homesick when you're overwhelmed with work. It can make you feel demotivated so get into a routine and timetable your schedule.
  5. Always celebrate your achievements, even if it's something like opening a bank account when you first get here, celebrate these moments.
  6. Don't forget to bring pictures from back home of your family and friends, looking at these can really help if you are feeling low.
  7. Decorate your room and make it your second home so when you come home after a long day it's a relaxing place to de-stress and enjoy.
  8. Always try to keep yourself busy. Even if it's keeping busy with small chores like cleaning your flat, this will distract you from just sitting alone and feeling down.
  9. Call your family back home often and talk to them, tell them about your time at university and everything that's happening, this can help to feel like they are with you during this time.
  10. Find a second family for yourself, and make new friends. This can take time but once you find real, true friends you won't feel alone.
