London's Winter Bucket List: Student Edition

Don't miss a single snowflake of the fun!

Hello! I’m Hetvi, a third-year student and your friendly RA here at Queen Mary! As the days are getting shorter and the jumpers are getting fluffier, London transforms into a magical twinkling winter wonderland. This list below will help you make sure you don’t miss a single snowflake of the fun!

Whether you are staying in London over the holidays or just soaking up the festive traditions and vibes before heading back home, I’ve put together a Winter Bucket List with all the cozy, budget-friendly and unique experiences you could need to make this winter one to remember.

1.      Visit Winter Wonderland

It’s classic but iconic! You can get the entry for free if you book earlier and the off-peak tickets and you can just stroll through the lights, grab a hot chocolate or try the Tower of Terror!! Pro tip: go with your flat mates so you can share your terror and maybe a plate of churros.

2.      Ice Skating at Canary Wharf

Just a few stops from campus, this rink is surrounded by glittery skyscrapers and fairy lights. Make sure to get your student discounts and to be careful, even though falling over is half the fun.

3.      Christmas Movie at JOIA Rooftop

Watch your favorite classics with a view! Think Elf under the stars, fairy lights twinkling, and a warm blanket wrapped around you. Even though it’s a little more luxe than your usual cinema trip, but totally worth it for the experience, especially if you split the snacks and tickets with friends. Arrive early for a seasonal cocktail and the best seat in the house.

4.      See the Christmas Lights

London in December is sparkling and magical! From Oxford Street to Carnaby to Covent Garden, London’s light displays are pure magic. Don’t forget your camera and your gloves!

5.      Cozy Flat mate Night In

Not every winter memory needs to be outdoors. Host a flat hot chocolate night, decorate your door or do a Secret Santa night. It’s the little things that make this season feel so special.

6.      Visit a Christmas Market

Be it South Bank, Greenwich, or even Spitalfields, these charming markets with handmade gifts, mulled wine, and the occasional carol singer is the perfect Christmas evening. It’s also great for last-minute presents!

So let’s make this winter one to remember, even if it rains (which it will).
