Come and join us as we take you on a journey to experience The Caribbean's and African's vibrant flavours, music and tradition.

What will the event look like?

The event is designed for you to visit each 'station' and take part in the activities, whilst also learning about Black Culture.

Station 1: Talking Drum Workshop🥁

This activity drum will be led by the founder of ML Percussions (a Talking Drum Company). There will be a focus on learning about the history and significance of the Talking Drum. You'll also have the chance to try out various drums and become a Talking Drum artist for the night!🥁

Here are some pictures of the drums you will get a chance to play! Exciting!

The Talking Drum originating from West Africa, served as a form of communication between the player and listener. It has gained popularity due to its increased use in the Afrobeats by artists such as Asake.

Station 2: Waist and Wrist Bead Making Workshop📿

You'll have the chance to make your own waist beads or wrist beads, commonly worn by Africans and The Caribbeans. We'll also explore the history behind these beads.

Station 3: Quiz (with opportunities to win prizes!)🏆

Test your knowledge of black culture at our quiz, featuring questions about music, the experience of being black at Queen Mary, the Talking Drums and beads.

Station 4: Food!😋

Prepared by QM Food we will be indulging in a Caribbean-inspired menu:

  • Jerk Chicken, Plantain Fries, and Corn on the Cob (both meat and veg options will be available)
  • Ginger Beer

All this for just £2!

Remember to bring a payment card to pay!

We can't wait to see you there!
