Get set up right for that essential good night's sleep

If you're finding it tough to get comfy, don’t panic. A bit of time, some easy adjustments, and a few clever tricks can help you make your room feel more like home.

It's normal to take time to adjust

First things first: if you're not getting the best night's sleep, it could be because you're in a new space. Whether it's the size of the room or simply the fact that it’s not your own bed, it’s totally normal for things to feel a bit off at first. Give yourself time to adjust; your body and mind might need a little while to settle into your new surroundings.

Easy fixes for comfort

If you’re still feeling like your bed is a bit of a struggle after the first few nights, there are a few simple ways to improve things.

  • Mattress topper: A quick, cost-effective fix is getting a mattress topper. It’s a great way to make the bed more comfortable, especially if the mattress feels a bit too firm or too soft. It’ll give you that extra cushion and support, making it a much comfier place to sleep. You can also keep using it with similar-sized beds going forward, so it's a worthy investment.
  • Extra bedding: You can also try adding more layers with extra blankets or a soft duvet. A bit of extra warmth can make all the difference, especially if the room gets a bit chilly at night and you're used to hotter weather.
  • Pillows & cushions: Don’t underestimate the power of good pillows! Adding a few more comfy pillows or cushions can help you get into a better position for sleeping or even just lounging around.

When to report an issue

If your bed is really uncomfortable, or there’s something about the bed frame or mattress that isn't right, it's worth reporting it. Your halls manager is there to help. They can inspect it and advise whether your bed frame or mattress needs to be replaced, or reassure you that they're the same standard as the bed frames and mattresses in the other rooms on campus.

Don't bring your mattress from home, as you'll have to keep the old one in your room.

Make your space your own

Beyond the bed, try making your room more personalised to help it feel like home. Add some battery-powered fairy lights, bring in a favourite throw, or hang up posters to create a space that’s comforting and familiar. The more you make the room yours, the more relaxed you’ll feel in it.

If you’re struggling, make sure to reach out for support. But in the meantime, try a mattress topper and give yourself some time to get comfy in your new space.
