Moving into halls is fun… until you realise you now have to live on your own, make a space that is your bedroom, dining room, office, and a safe space overall. The good news? I have carefully curated a list of items that are essential for students moving into halls that won’t drain your bank account.
Here are 10 student essentials under £10 that genuinely make your day-to-day life easier. You can grab most of these items from nearby supermarkets, homeware stores or online (and you’ll usually find cheaper alternatives on big websites too).
1. Water filter
Stay hydrated without constantly buying bottled water. A simple filter makes tap water taste fresher and saves money over time. They come in different sizes, but a 2.5-litre filter is ideal, not too heavy, not too bulky, and doesn’t need refilling often.
2. AirTag
This is the most underrated recommendation and the most useful. Being in London, you can never be too careful when it comes to your valuable items. Attach it to your keys, bag or laptop case. When you’re running late for a 9am, being able to track your stuff is a lifesaver too.
3. Comfy rug
Bare floors are standard in student rooms, but a small rug instantly makes your space feel warmer, softer and more homely. It’s a step towards making it your safe space.
4. Stone drying mat
Perfect for shared kitchens! It dries dishes quickly, looks neat on the counter and saves precious worktop space. It’s an ideal way to save time in style!
5. Storage boxes
Under bed boxes or foldable fabric ones are game-changers. Great for clothes, like sweaters and heavy jackets kept away during summer to make the most of your closet space, snacks, spare bedding or “I’ll deal with this later” items. They keep your room looking tidy even when life isn’t.
6. Desk organiser
Pens, highlighters, sticky notes, random paper clips, your notes, important deadlines, to-do lists: give everything a place. A clear desk makes it so much easier to focus when you have to deal with tight deadlines.
7. Laundry basket
Foldable and slim, also available with different sections for whites and colours! It makes carrying your laundry to the laundry room so much easier, especially if it’s a bit of a walk. It also stops your floor or chair from turning into a permanent clothes pile.
8. Wardrobe sorter
This is a lifesaver hack! It saves so much of your closet space when you can hang multiple items vertically. Suddenly your wardrobe feels twice as big. Ideal if you’ve brought half your wardrobe from home like me.
9. Accessories organiser
Keep chargers, earphones and USBs in one compact pouch. Perfect for library days, lectures or travelling home for the weekend.
10. Sunset lamp / LED lights
Turn your plain room into a cosy, aesthetic space. Great for late-night study sessions or just unwinding after a long day.
You don’t need to buy everything at once! Start with what fits your budget and your space. These are all small, affordable things, but together they make your room feel more organised, more comfortable and more you.
