The best walks on your doorstep

Going for a walk has lots of benefits for both your mental and physical health!

And despite London's massive urban area, there are plenty of scenic routes full of greenery that can offer a tranquil walk if you need an hour or so away from your computer screen.

This is a brilliant way to get to know the City — and to make live even easier, we've grouped them all into a handy map. You could visit them all in a day!

Starting at Queen Mary, Mile End campus, you can walk to them all in order:

Stepney Green Park

A beautiful green space right on your doorstep, Stepney Green Park is a 13-minute walk from Queen Mary down Mile End Road and has 4.62 hectares of space to roam around. There are also astroturf pitches which you can book for playing sport with friends.

Weavers Fields

Weavers Field is the largest open space in the western part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and is a 16-minute walk from Floyer House. With so much space there's so much to see, it even has a self-guided nature trail guide. Plus what great views of the amazing architecture of London's skyscrapers.

Meath Gardens

Meath Gardens was formerly the Victoria Park Cemetery, but after it fell into disuse, it was re-opened as Meath Gardens. There are football and basketball facilities, which you can book for a nice summer's day. It's only a 12-minute walk via Bancroft Road. Who knew you had all this green space just a stone's throw away!

Victoria Park

Victoria Park is a fabulous spot — the cafe shops offer takeaway hot drinks and public toilets are available. The park is a 20-minute walk via the canal towpath or Grove Road and is very picturesque no matter the weather. Stretch your legs for a quick hours walk or put on your favourite podcast or playlist and enjoy your time around the park.

Mile End Park

Located next to campus this park is right on your doorstep located just the other side of the Canal to Queen Mary University (a 10-minute walk from Queen Mary Mile End Campus to Mile End Park). The park follows the Regent's Canal from Victoria Park to Limehouse Basin, and is separated from the southern edge of Victoria Park by the Hertford Union Canal.

Whether you're a seasoned explorer or just looking for a casual stroll, these parks offer a mix of tranquility and adventure. Each one has its own unique charm, from quiet paths to vibrant community spaces. So, whether you prefer a quiet picnic, a brisk walk, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, you’re sure to find something that speaks to you. Lace up your walking shoes, grab a friend, and embark on a journey that lets you choose your own adventure.
