Introducing your new Residential Assistants Team! 

Making up part of the Residential Life team, Residential Assistants (RAs) are current students at Queen Mary that live in halls of residence to help support you, host events and make your time at QM the best it can be.

You will come across the team many times during your stay in halls, including at your Flat Meetings so be sure to introduce yourself and say hello! 

So you can get to know them a little better, we asked each RA to provide you with some words of wisdom, take a look below.

What is your favourite thing about QM? I love the diversity in QM and meeting people from different countries and backgrounds.
Favourite thing to do in East London/London? Spontaneous exploring in London
What advice would you give to first-year students? Make sure to take some time to rest and have fun!
Why did you want to become an RA? To create new ideas and make the time at QM enjoyable for all students

What is your favourite thing about QM? The Canal
Favourite thing to do in East London/ London? Visit Bookshops 
What advice would you give to first-year students? Take advantage of the "free time" you have. You will not have much of it later. 
Why did you want to become an RA? It provided the opportunity to be a part of a dynamic environment.

What advice will you give to first-year students? Enjoy and make the most out of your time in London whilst studying.
Why did you want to become an RA? To make an impact in the lives of fellow students and help them enjoy their stay in QM Halls.

What favourite thing about QM? The diverse cohort of people who can provide a wide range of points of view and perspectives
Favourite thing to do around London? Visit the galleries and parks around London and try new types and styles of food
What advice will you give to first-year students? Make as many friends as possible and join a few societies.
Why did you want to become an RA? To help the development of the residential and halls community around QM as well as helping to improve the student experience here at QM.

What is your favourite thing about QM? The location
Favourite thing to do in East London/London? Going out for cocktails
What advice would you give to first-year students? Explore the non-touristy areas of London and take lots of photos
Why did you want to become an RA? To meet new people and be able to continue to live on campus.

Hometown: I’m from Venezuela but I am also half Italian 
Course and year: I study Biomedical Engineering

Describe yourself in three words: I would describe myself as independent, motivated and kind 
What is your favourite thing about QM? The people I have met. Everyone is always trying to help and keep you motivated to try your best! 
Favourite thing to do in East London/London? It’s the diversity of cultures and the large amount of fun sites close to the Mile End campus, such as restaurants, bars and parks. 
What advice would you give to first-year students? Enjoy this year as much as possible by being open-minded, trying to new things and mindfully divide their time between work and discovering the city. 
Why did you want to become an RA? I wanted to become an RA because I wanted to involve myself with the university as much as possible and meet students from other years!

Describe yourself in three words: Old cat lady. Jks :). Charismatic, organised, adventurous.
Favourite thing about QM? The Campus! I can get quite lazy, so having the library, laundry room, coffee shop, and gym all 2 minutes away from each other was a lifesaver.
Favourite thing to do in East London? Walking around Victoria Park on a sunny day, having breakfast at the coffee shops in Hackney, looking around the funky shops in Shoreditch.
What advice would you give to a first-year student? Get involved in as many activities as you can, as long as they sound interesting to you, and don’t be scared to make mistakes, this is the perfect time to learn from them.
Why did you want to become an RA? It seemed like a dynamic job, perfect for energetic people like myself. There are lots of different things to do every week and many surprises.

Name: Natasha Iqbal

Course and year: Bsc Accounting and Management – Second year

Describe yourself in 3 words: Creative, adventurous, friendly
What is your favourite thing about QM? Everyone is so friendly and the atmosphere on campus is vibrant. Being a part of a community that is very diverse is also something that I value a lot.
Favourite thing to do in East London/ London? My favourite thing to do in London is to admire many of the art pieces across the city, whether it's heading down to Brick Lane to see work by popular artists like Banksy or attending art exhibitions like the Van Gogh one that is currently on display.
What advice would you give to first-year students? Push yourself out of your comfort zone!!! Don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things as well as meeting new people since you never know what can happen.
Why did you want to become an RA? I wanted to become an RA because I wanted to get involved as much as possible at university and because I enjoyed liked living on campus in my first year. The residential assistant role appealed to me as I truly care about my university and the student body.

What is your favourite thing about QM? The people, they’re just so interesting and kind
Favourite thing to do in East London/ London? Go for a walk by the canal from QM to Camden market
What advice would you give to first-year students? Make sure to use your first year to the fullest. Enjoy the company, the opportunities, the events. Make sure to make it a year to remember, the best start to your new chapter of life.
Why did you want to become an RA? I’ve heard from the former RAs that they love the job, working with people and how versatile it is. This, for me, a sort of a jack of all trades, seemed like a perfect opportunity, so here I am now.

Describe yourself in 3 words: Free-spirited, sociable & ambitious
What is your favourite thing about QM? My favourite thing about QM is the sense of community that it offers which can be felt across every campus spread across London. Especially, as the university is situated in the heart of one of the biggest cities in the world, this sense of belonging in a community can really make the difference in experience for a new student and makes settling into uni just that bit easier and more comfortable. 
Favourite thing to do in East London/ London? As a foodie myself, my favourite thing to do in East London is trying out all the varieties of food on offer from all across the world right in front of your doorstep! Favourite spot currently is probably Old Spitalfields Market for the sheer variety of world wide street food available, and also for the chai (tea) from chai-guys 😍
What advice would you give to first-year students? Well done, you have made it into a world-class Russell Group university! Spend your time wisely, explore yourself, step outside and push yourself to stay outside of your comfort zone as much as you can - you won't know how quickly this amazing time flies! 
Why did you want to become an RA? I wanted to become an RA because I truly enjoy meeting new people and finding solutions for people's problems, therefore the role of an RA allowed me to do both of that in a fast paced and engaging work environment.

Favourite thing about Queen Mary? I think the community is one of the best things about QM. You also get a sense that everyone is inclusive and nice.
Favourite thing about London? Shopping, eating great food, and the views!
What advice would you give to first-year students?  Stay on top of work but enjoy everything and try new things!
Why did you want to become an RA? I loved my first year on campus and wanted to get involved to try and make the experience as enjoyable for everyone else as well.

What is your favourite thing about QM? I love the campus! There's so much to explore and loads of events to take part in.
Favourite thing to do in East London/London? I love exploring markets such as Borough Market and Spitalfields Market to find new places to eat. 
What advice would you give to first-year students? Get involved in as many societies and events as you can - there's something for everyone and you won't regret it!
Why did you want to become an RA? I really enjoyed living on campus last year and wanted to share my experience with the new students.

What is your favourite thing about QM? It’s a melting pot of a diverse group of people from whom there is so much to learn.
Favourite thing to do in East London/London? Walking around the parks and exploring the numerous restaurants.
What advice would you give to first-year students? Live, Laugh, Love
Why did you want to become an RA? Cheesy, but to hopefully help other students share the same wonderful experiences that I have had so far living in QM halls.
